OBJECTIVES:
The LLA offers rising high school sophomores and juniors the opportunity to:
identify leadership skills
apply leadership skills to collaborative project with peers
reflect on our identity and heritage
get glimpse of college life through a stay away institute on college campus
build self-awareness and confidence that can be applied to their academics in high school
APPLICATION PROCESS:
VALHEN strives to be an equitable organization for our Virginia students. Program participants may only attend one VALHEN program per year and may only apply to the program they most align with. Once a selected student confirms their participation (see instructions on selection email) they will have a spot in the program that accepted them which will be shared with all program directors to ensure one student does not receive double admission. If a student does not confirm within the program’s timeline, the spot will be given to to the next student on the waiting list. Students may not attend the same program more than once. If an applicant attempts to break this policy they will not be admitted to apply for future VALHEN programs, including Adelante Scholarships.
The LLA accepts open applications for current freshman and sophomore students between Feb - May and students will be notified May 10-15. Accepted students will participate in a no-cost two night/three day in person program with workshops on self-awareness, civic engagement, and leadership led by college mentors and university facilitators. Families will be invited to join us in person for a picnic and JMU campus tour on July 25 (transportation will not be provided). For more program information contact the VALHEN LLA Coordinator, Karina Kline-Gabel, at llajmu@gmail.com. (click on the brochure below to see example brochure).
