Every year, VALHEN awards scholarships to students who graduate from a Commonwealth of Virginia high school and/or attend, on a full-time basis, a public or private institution of higher education in Virginia as an undergraduate student. Your generous contributions ensure that talented students realize their full potential and achieve the dream to attend college.

🎓 VALHEN ADELANTE Scholarship Guidelines

Key Rules & Eligibility

• Tuition Only: Funds cover college tuition expenses only and are sent directly to your institution.

• Virginia Schools Only: Eligible institutions must be located in Virginia.

• Eligible Terms: Funds apply strictly to fall or spring semesters (summer and winter terms are excluded).

• 4-Year Window: ADELANTE scholarships must be used within 4 years.

• Full-Tuition Restriction: If you receive a full-tuition scholarship from another organization, your VALHEN award will be redirected to another student. If this is the case, do not request funding.

Payment Request & Deadlines

• How to Request: Submit the Scholarship & Award Funding Request Form above to initiate yearly tuition payment. Requests are verified against official records before processing.

• When to Request: The fiscal year opens on July 1. You may submit your request starting July 1 for the upcoming academic year.

• Processing Time: Allow 2–4 weeks for payment processing.

• Renewable Scholarships: Submit only one request per year.

• Expiration Date: College Institute awards expire on August 30 of the program year. Funding cannot be requested or received once your college semester has started.

Would you like to apply for a VALHEN scholarship?

The VALHEN scholarship program is dedicated to assist Latino/x first gen students (first generation of their family to attend college) to pursue higher education within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Scholarship awards range from one year to 4 year renewable awards and will be paid directly to the recipient’s college or university to cover tuition, books, and/or fees. Undocumented or DACA students are encouraged to apply. *To receive renewable scholarships, you must still be a registered student with a minimum GPA of 2.0 attending a Virginia college or university and the awards are for fall and semester academic periods only.

Applicants must

1. Be a first generation college student

2. Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. (4.0 scale)

3. Be a high school senior or graduate of a Virginia high school and either have been accepted to, or be already enrolled, as a full-time undergraduate student, in a degree granting private or public Virginia college or university

4. Be able to demonstrate leadership through involvement in school, the local community, government or non-profit organization, work /job duties, or in another manner not mentioned here

5. Essays of 300-500 words are required for all applicants

Finalists must

1. Provide an official HS transcript

2. Provide contact information for two references a) teacher b) a peer or non-teacher reference (not a family member)
